Two Ugly Quilts Finished

Last year I went through all my scraps and actually managed to clear out an entire box.

One of the things I did with all those scraps was sew the strips together and eventually I had a pile of 12.5" squares all ready to be turned into quilts. 

I put them together into two "Ugly Quilts" 

They were quilted in a giant meandering stipple.  With all kinds of various threads that I've been trying to use up. 

This one is 8'x8'.  Hubby told me to "go big or go home"  It was funny because at the time it was more like "go big and stay home".

It does make for a nice family size beach blanket!  

Used up some more ugly fabrics on the back.

The second one turned out to be 7' x 6'.  This one is for E's Car.  She requested a "nicer back"

It's actually part of a clearance cotton duvet cover from Ikea.

Two Finish Tuesday

 Hi!  I've finished up a couple of 'easy' quilts over the weekend.  First up is the blue and red baby quilt.  I got lots of responses last time I posted about it that red was great for a baby.  So here it is all done up.

 Finished size is 30" x 36".  The lady bug fabric has been in my stash for at least 10 years.  It never seems to get completely used up.  The red I picked up at a thrift store.  Unknown age, but the width was smaller than our 44/42" average now, so definitely 'vintage'.  Pretty sure it is cotton, though.

 Simple quilting.  I did the binding by machine; Hand sewing the mitered corners first, then machine the rest.

 I also finished up Ugly Quilt #1

 It's spectacular!  I used a thin polyester batting in it that I had picked up a whole roll of at Joann's Thanksgiving sale.  It is the perfect weight.  The quilt really fought being squared up.  I finally gave up because I didn't want to keep cutting it smaller.  It really doesn't matter.  This one is destined for the beach & car.

 I used a thrift store sheet to back it.  The binding is also scrappy.  I save my 2" strips separately, so I just randomly sewed a bunch together for the binding.  This binding is also completely machine finished.  Finished size: 53" x 95".

Ugly Quilts #1 & #2

Hello, Hello.  I feel like I've been away for ever, although its just been a few days.  It is cold here.  We woke up to -7 F this morning.  Fortunately the sun is out.  That helps the mood.

This weekend I worked on my ugly quilt.  Which turned into two ugly quilts.  I've been fighting a cold for a few days and knew that I didn't want to sew anything that 'mattered'.  So I started putting the strips together and this is the result.

 Try hard not to cringe.  It is destined to be a car/beach quilt.  I realize that perception is not good in this picture.  It is at least a full size quilt top.  I even have the perfect backing for it, however that is out in the barn.  And did I mention its below zero?  Not gonna happen today.

 The pieces that I couldn't fit into the first top, I sewed together into this.  Probably destined for a cat or dog bed.

The funny thing about doing these tops is I really feel like I've made something out of nothing.  I just took all the strips from my scrap bin (except the 2" ones - saving those for something else), I sorted them roughly by length and started sewing them together.  The only 'rule' was to try not to sew two of the same fabric next to each other. 

These fabrics really vary in quality and quantity. They go all the way back to my very first quilt.  And while I can't say that there is fabric from every quilt I've made in these, its close.

And the best thing?  My Scrap Box is about half empty.  My next two projects out of it will be to cut squares out of the scraps and then to decide what to do with all the orphan blocks.  I think they will get their own post.
