At the beginning of April maybe end of March, <a href="https://www.pitchersboutique.com/shop?page=5">Sarah of Pitchers Boutique</a>, was looking for some pattern tester volunteers. I usually miss out, but I think this time around I was probably the only one who was willing to do something like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothra">Mothra! </a>She is a Kaiju from the same "family" as Godzilla and Gamera. I knew about her thanks to my geeky family.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BrGAhF6s_XM/XqdTzsf4NrI/AAAAAAAAS9Q/XWXhi3C_EzA5dEsVAWTr2VLBFQHxyxznACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200404_135535.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BrGAhF6s_XM/XqdTzsf4NrI/AAAAAAAAS9Q/XWXhi3C_EzA5dEsVAWTr2VLBFQHxyxznACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200404_135535.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Anyway, I was send the amazingly detailed foundation piecing pattern and set to work. I started with the eye.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v9I6WeoCk8Q/XqdTzFQEN2I/AAAAAAAAS9M/zNtYx3ZoFmkgRzVBiDky2kj3erffwnpIwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200405_132701.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v9I6WeoCk8Q/XqdTzFQEN2I/AAAAAAAAS9M/zNtYx3ZoFmkgRzVBiDky2kj3erffwnpIwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200405_132701.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This is my set up for foundation piecing. Best invention ever? The add a quarter ruler!! I may need an Add an Eighth, now, too.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GzUs3TrRuuc/XqdTzEKLEeI/AAAAAAAAS9I/7pGEcJxqW189BXHYNqG44MRf-QLzyDVJACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200407_113226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GzUs3TrRuuc/XqdTzEKLEeI/AAAAAAAAS9I/7pGEcJxqW189BXHYNqG44MRf-QLzyDVJACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200407_113226.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I crease the fabric folds with my thumb, and after a couple days working on this, noticed I had worn down the nail from friction.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XkCgqbeN6Gs/XqdT1uZcs-I/AAAAAAAAS9Y/NptcO4YgSKsQfKfdMf1ijrNeSIRnXUvUwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200407_124735.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XkCgqbeN6Gs/XqdT1uZcs-I/AAAAAAAAS9Y/NptcO4YgSKsQfKfdMf1ijrNeSIRnXUvUwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200407_124735.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
All the pieces laid out. This is by far the most complicated foundation paper piecing I've ever done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dvyMjdl34HA/XqdT2MYStKI/AAAAAAAAS9c/aHm_1rDq3bk4VuT39wPg8d1s7iVM1kLlQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200407_154619.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dvyMjdl34HA/XqdT2MYStKI/AAAAAAAAS9c/aHm_1rDq3bk4VuT39wPg8d1s7iVM1kLlQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200407_154619.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Found a mistake as I was putting things together. I forgot to add color and went straight to back ground.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bmwZhgMiNsM/XqdT1kLmLnI/AAAAAAAAS9U/TL-lriEZW2kUEi7muDIZ0DPXfbp0AjF5gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200407_200224.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1434" data-original-width="1488" height="616" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bmwZhgMiNsM/XqdT1kLmLnI/AAAAAAAAS9U/TL-lriEZW2kUEi7muDIZ0DPXfbp0AjF5gCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200407_200224.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And here she is, all put together. I did the 30 x 30 version. I don't have definite plans for her yet. It was a fun thing to do and a great challenge. You really need to visit the <a href="https://www.pitchersboutique.com/shop?page=5">Pitcher's Boutique shop. </a> Lots of free and reasonably price patterns and such a huge variety!Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09087372950527979136noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8564846556280971762.post-36508692978641794892020-04-29T08:00:00.000-05:002020-04-29T08:00:00.648-05:00Really Random Wednesday 4.29.20<script>

I made my first foccacia loaf. I will try again and with less salt. There were no leftovers, though.<br />

<a href="https://rachel-thelifeofriley.blogspot.com/2017/09/the-ultimate-geek-quilt-finish.html">Do you remember this quilt? </a>Well, its needed some repairs for a while, and I haven't wanted to do it. At all. Its like altering a dress, I'd almost rather start from scratch. BUT... hubby works out of a camper and wanted a background for his online meetings that didn't scream CAMPER, so I suggested hanging his quilt - which meant I had to repair it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tPBbBnnSpGw/XqdNhLm6tcI/AAAAAAAAS8s/v2UN5F0bUGwUcbs-_V3H62f0QbthA9JrgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200422_211015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tPBbBnnSpGw/XqdNhLm6tcI/AAAAAAAAS8s/v2UN5F0bUGwUcbs-_V3H62f0QbthA9JrgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200422_211015.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

I shared on social media how excited I was to have a second fridge in our garage. I don't think I've ever gotten so many comments. Everyone agreed that a second fridge is the best!<br />

Waaay back on March 22 (seems a long time ago, for sure) <a href="https://gequiltdesigns.com/">Gudrun Erla of GEDesigns</a> did a Quarantine Quilt Along on her Facebook page. The pattern was <u>Elvira</u> , which she made available for free. I thought it would be a fun thing to do and a good way to remember the time of #saferathome Little did I know we would be kept at home for so long. <br />
<br />
I believe she's planning another round, with a different pattern for May 3.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wfW3saV5qEQ/XqdIpBGW4AI/AAAAAAAAS7M/UKgSNr42algXxbHzqpdPNfZHSMpKikJTACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200321_205801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wfW3saV5qEQ/XqdIpBGW4AI/AAAAAAAAS7M/UKgSNr42algXxbHzqpdPNfZHSMpKikJTACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200321_205801.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I decided this was an excellent opportunity to use up two fat quarter stacks that I had. Both were from Wisconsin fabrics from Wisconsin Quilt Store Shop Hops. One was 2014 and one 2015. I don't think they were by the same designers, but the colors were so close that they worked well together. And since the blocks were big, it was a perfect chance to showcase some of the larger prints.<br />
BTW, the honeybee is the Wisconsin State Insect!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LWG3vme030A/XqdIolmpRuI/AAAAAAAAS7I/-gqIYKjfB-8nc4dX4NswKD0--2BVUWKQQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200321_212632.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LWG3vme030A/XqdIolmpRuI/AAAAAAAAS7I/-gqIYKjfB-8nc4dX4NswKD0--2BVUWKQQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200321_212632.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This was one of the prints - vintage postcards from around Wisconsin.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0RObAh2Td7E/XqdIqdVnxYI/AAAAAAAAS7U/uJvE6rloMOc9h0FBfjvBEhTog78T3d_uACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200322_133959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0RObAh2Td7E/XqdIqdVnxYI/AAAAAAAAS7U/uJvE6rloMOc9h0FBfjvBEhTog78T3d_uACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200322_133959.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I did end up adding in three or four neutrals to get the fat quarter count up to queen size. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uQ6QE14wjLM/XqdIrZVyKQI/AAAAAAAAS7Y/HCvsYYKPpxkGXgG-7Jr_b5YmNt7_aMA0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200322_230103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uQ6QE14wjLM/XqdIrZVyKQI/AAAAAAAAS7Y/HCvsYYKPpxkGXgG-7Jr_b5YmNt7_aMA0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200322_230103.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Very easy blocks and a super efficient way to use fat quarters. Its is a very well designed pattern. So good, I may even consider making it again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fRvA9O1PYrg/XqdIrfBAVjI/AAAAAAAAS7c/UyCgERHf-7wZpEfCHmDeJZpTxHQrfuMnACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200323_162324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><strike><i><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fRvA9O1PYrg/XqdIrfBAVjI/AAAAAAAAS7c/UyCgERHf-7wZpEfCHmDeJZpTxHQrfuMnACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200323_162324.jpg" width="640" /></i></strike></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was no way I was going to actually get it done in one day - many people did! I think it took me a week to get it all put together. <a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NZ9GiDMI5zg/XqdIrrLERjI/AAAAAAAAS7g/cjxUHC9FLbsLPO41m41FfPqhshp7OgLSgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200323_174824.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NZ9GiDMI5zg/XqdIrrLERjI/AAAAAAAAS7g/cjxUHC9FLbsLPO41m41FfPqhshp7OgLSgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200323_174824.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zV_tzNcdXT8/XqdIs0nBMKI/AAAAAAAAS7k/ghStkFZibTEAIkOwWYdN_0-OkxuJtlVZACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200326_164033.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zV_tzNcdXT8/XqdIs0nBMKI/AAAAAAAAS7k/ghStkFZibTEAIkOwWYdN_0-OkxuJtlVZACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200326_164033.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Here it is on the bed when I found the mistake!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q0ZNISvTlOI/XqdIvN2RlTI/AAAAAAAAS7w/Oo91n-T0q9klIlmRVbmNL2ns_0ps6Dq6QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200326_164159.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q0ZNISvTlOI/XqdIvN2RlTI/AAAAAAAAS7w/Oo91n-T0q9klIlmRVbmNL2ns_0ps6Dq6QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200326_164159.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
It's really the only directional fabric in the whole bunch, but the two blocks with it were opposite, so it had to be moved. Especially given where it is on the quilt. I would have seen it every time I walked in the room!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fjsiiMMSx1Q/XqdIuDUVoFI/AAAAAAAAS7o/jRScgcIQ-pQQWr2n4wGcsNV9iI1K1WjcQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200326_164054.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fjsiiMMSx1Q/XqdIuDUVoFI/AAAAAAAAS7o/jRScgcIQ-pQQWr2n4wGcsNV9iI1K1WjcQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200326_164054.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
These were a couple pieces I saved for the backing, because I didn't want them cut up.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y8_mdqSkb28/XqdIuf8zpbI/AAAAAAAAS7s/m35BvXZoTqYp5VZu5PyZ7rPP8NWqmXWQgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200326_164117.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y8_mdqSkb28/XqdIuf8zpbI/AAAAAAAAS7s/m35BvXZoTqYp5VZu5PyZ7rPP8NWqmXWQgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200326_164117.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
My back is pieced and ready to go. It is pretty crazy! I even got some cows and pigs on the back. I'll share better when I get the whole thing quilted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Right now I am waiting for batting to arrive at my home. I have a number of quilts ready to go, just need batting!<br />

Thanks to previous blog records, I can say with certainty that I've been working on this project now for two years. Almost exactly two years. <a href="https://rachel-thelifeofriley.blogspot.com/2018/05/the-new-10-year-project.html">Started it in April 2018.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YN8ILFVp6to/Xp-Rhimx6rI/AAAAAAAAS6c/dWsMm5R1NtoRFFoIRvRk3UeP8BFIjXfnwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200421_105920.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1247" data-original-width="1552" height="514" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YN8ILFVp6to/Xp-Rhimx6rI/AAAAAAAAS6c/dWsMm5R1NtoRFFoIRvRk3UeP8BFIjXfnwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200421_105920.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I decided to count the finished plates. There are 185 plates in total. I hadn't counted them before. I'm not sure I should have counted them.....<br />
<br />
Only 30 are appliqued. OK, actually 29.25.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TWcJzx_LLz4/Xp-RiJve_zI/AAAAAAAAS6g/X6Uiw_7Y4yohYj8mNAfDcrQTy2ylAku5ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200421_105934.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TWcJzx_LLz4/Xp-RiJve_zI/AAAAAAAAS6g/X6Uiw_7Y4yohYj8mNAfDcrQTy2ylAku5ACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200421_105934.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The truth is that I don't do a lot of sit and stitch lately, so I'm trying to be more deliberate about working on them when I am sitting in front of TV.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eHPPbdpETPU/Xp-RhRfkXJI/AAAAAAAAS6Y/Ki_aF0rWHRwhQe-8PvlnZ1mykxBNOYP5QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200421_105946.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eHPPbdpETPU/Xp-RhRfkXJI/AAAAAAAAS6Y/Ki_aF0rWHRwhQe-8PvlnZ1mykxBNOYP5QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200421_105946.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Last week when I was trying to organize projects and do some cleaning up, I went ahead and cut (all?) the background squares. Applique on!<br />
<br />
Hopefully our trip to Florida will happen - lots of car stitching time.<br />
Hopefully.......<br />
<br />

Some helpers getting a photo of the Temperature Quilt. It was too windy, otherwise. Here I am showing through April 13. I've switched to a green background for Spring. I believe it is Kona "Pear" At the top you can see one day with yellow/orange. That was our outlier of 79 degrees!<br />

This one was fun because the middle block came from a friend of mine and I asked for it because she was GOING TO THROW IT AWAY!! So I built a baby quilt around the block.<br />

What a six weeks it has been! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We've officially been #saferathome now for 37 days.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What's been happening around here? Well, we are certainly into a new kind of routine. I'll give a brief rundown for friends and family who read this here blog.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All the kids are doing "School at Home". (I consider this much different that Homeschooling) As such I do a lot of facilitating for the younger three to help with watching pre-recorded lectures, zoom meetings and work alone papers and projects. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The older two are also doing online schooling, but (fortunately) don't need much from me. They already had school issued Chromebooks, so the transition hasn't been too terrible. Awkward for classes like choir and basic electronics, but they are making it work. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In general mornings are school work and afternoons are outside time/yard work/screen time, etc. </div>

We did a beach trip one day, but it was cold and windy by the lake, and we couldn't play on the playground. But it was nice to be out.<br />

Si celebrated his 10th birthday during week 1 of Stayathome. He was sad that he couldn't share it with his classmates. If you're wondering the cake is from "Legend of Zelda"<br />

We made a big deal of April Fool's this year to change it up and have some fun. Lots of googly eyes were applied to foods and other kitchen items.<br />

I got a new set of bees. Decided to try three hives this year, with hubby's encouragement. I actually have already lost one (long story), but have just ordered another package that will come in May. Hubby has been super into it this year, even donning his own jacket and doing inspections with me. I love it!<br />

I've also been doing a lot of Etsy sales. ( <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/RileyAcres?ref=seller-platform-mcnav">Riley Acres</a> if you're interested) So much business that I needed a new batch of thread conditioners last week. I've also been helping WD sell antique fishing gear. </div>

So that pretty much catches us all up.</div>

And, oh yes. I <i>have</i> been sewing. Quite a bit actually. But I don't think that's because I have "so much time on my hands". Every time I see a suggestion of what to do with my "extra time" I don't know whether to laugh or cry! I'll start sharing some of the sewing stuff next blog post. </div>

I caught up my temperature quilt to March 2 last week. I'm on the third row! There is a certain satisfaction in growing a quilt this way!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8hYGU-GWtvQ/XmKOfEsCQaI/AAAAAAAAS2U/BkElarlWgcE1ILd2sqhPDP2xoF8qJhl9ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200303_104801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8hYGU-GWtvQ/XmKOfEsCQaI/AAAAAAAAS2U/BkElarlWgcE1ILd2sqhPDP2xoF8qJhl9ACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200303_104801.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Got up to a new highest temperature on March 1. Over 54. March definitely came in a like a quiet, warm lamb. Not as many colder temperatures, either. Although when I check the forecast I'm always secretly hoping for variations from day to day to make the quilt more interesting. :)<br />

The process of making these Quilt As You Go Hexagons can get a bit tedious with all the folding and ironing <a href="https://rachel-thelifeofriley.blogspot.com/2020/02/quilt-as-you-go-hexagons-quick-tutorial.html">(read about the process here) </a><br />
<br />
I was so excited to remember that a few years ago I had bought a Martelli Round About Set. It has an ironing top and a cutting mat on a turn table. <br />
<br />
Now I can iron and spin. Every time saving thing helps!<br />

Since I was cleaning them out, I went through all my quilts in storage. I got all the children's baby quilts put together and put away and went through all the rest. Some are getting donated, a few will probably get listed on Etsy. Most I kept </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I personally have been pretty good about labeling my quilts. However, I do have a few quilts from my mom that were never labeled. I think that, like me, she must have given away most of the quilts that she made. And, unfortunately, I don't know what happened to my college quilt, which had a larger than life <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_the_Martian">Marvin the Martian</a> appliqued on one side.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, I decided that the quilts all needed to be labeled. Here are a few of hers:</div>

I also finally got a label on this, my first finished quilt ever. I faithfully pull it out each December!<br />

I've had one kid home sick most of the week. Fortunately they were all off Monday, he stayed home Tues and Wed, and only managed a half day today. Current nickname: Captain Croup.</div>

A finish. A years long finish. I searched the blog and found the first mention of this quilt. You can read it <a href="https://rachel-thelifeofriley.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-evolution-of-quilt-top.html">*here*. </a> The post is from November 2014! Can you believe it? That's almost 6 whole years ago!!<br />

The pattern is Charm Parade and was written by <a href="http://www.liveacolorfullife.net/">Cindy from Live a Colorful Life. </a><br />
Mostly Kaffe Fassett charm squares. The border is a batik.<br />
<br />
My cute helper squinting in the sun! <br />
<br />
I did some simple stitch in the ditch. Any more than that would have been lost anyway and wanted a softer quilt. I had the quilt stored with the backing for a long time, and had even made the binding. <br />

The backing is from IKEA. Probably six years ago! I don't know if IKEA even makes fun prints anymore. It seems the last few times I've looked there haven't been any. <br />
<br />
This particular quilt finished at 49" x 60". Thread is navy Aurifil and batting a mystery polyester.<br />

It's been Spirit Week at school. I had to share the pictures, because they're cute, and a couple took a bit of sewing. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XpMfZZAwY3s/XlfhQ7T8b3I/AAAAAAAASxo/32ovHTSwoUYs5u9s-UFmZ8O4ixiDRx_3wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200224_072147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XpMfZZAwY3s/XlfhQ7T8b3I/AAAAAAAASxo/32ovHTSwoUYs5u9s-UFmZ8O4ixiDRx_3wCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200224_072147.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
Mini won on day one "Camo Day". That dress? I found at a thrift store. Paid $2.50. It was an XS women's dress by Ralph Lauren!! I took off the two bottom layers of skirt and it fit Mini perfectly! I do think that Camo Day is probably a Wisconsin thing....<br />

Disney Day. Mini is Tinkerbell. You can't see the wings, but I made them at least 10 years ago for E. And I had to figure out the puffballs on her shoes. Probably Mini's favorite part.<br />

And made a poodle skirt for Mini. Every girl needs one. It was an easy and fast project. Probably less than an hour. I did reference <a href="https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/poodle-skirt-for-halloween-or-for-fun-2977794">this tutorial,</a> however I only used it for the measurements. As an experienced sewist, the instructions weren't great... <br />

I quilted up a panel that I bought last year. Are you surprised? It's bees! And Bible Verses! J Wecker Frisch generally likes to put in bits of Bible verses in her designs. This one is pretty obvious, the Beatitudes. If you want the actual list check out Matthew 5:1-12<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T-CZMaB-R_0/XlfdUexUoCI/AAAAAAAASw4/GZQ_8TRKAHUFPO7uK9HYp8SX6dcVtxGoACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200219_123709.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1267" data-original-width="1106" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T-CZMaB-R_0/XlfdUexUoCI/AAAAAAAASw4/GZQ_8TRKAHUFPO7uK9HYp8SX6dcVtxGoACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200219_123709.jpg" width="558" /></a></div>
My biggest problem with panels is that they are never really printed straight. To trim and bind to the printing, the quilt itself is slightly wonky.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ReRvGtVEN-E/XlfdcfB7FMI/AAAAAAAASw8/xu0AW8TWUmAH_EbhaFF2TlyTt8HNY3FFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200219_123747.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ReRvGtVEN-E/XlfdcfB7FMI/AAAAAAAASw8/xu0AW8TWUmAH_EbhaFF2TlyTt8HNY3FFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200219_123747.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This is a better shot of the backing colors. The fabric is long ago Ruby fabric from Bonnie and Camille.<br />

A couple close up shots of the panel.<br />

I just did some straight line quilting and a little bit of outlining in each box with Invisafil thread. The batting is a thin mystery polyester.<br />
<br />
Can't wait to hang it up and celebrate spring - once St Patrick's day is done.<br />

Since this year's temperature quilt plan is Quilt as You Go Hexagons, I thought I'd share a quick tutorial. I'm sure you can find others out there, and I don't claim to be an expert. I have done 45 so far, though....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NhrdWfaYonI/Xk7iVOxvdTI/AAAAAAAASuo/CDGmn6u1SewrZzNWORgCPohrqzM3UcTZwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200212_111655.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1307" data-original-width="1476" height="566" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NhrdWfaYonI/Xk7iVOxvdTI/AAAAAAAASuo/CDGmn6u1SewrZzNWORgCPohrqzM3UcTZwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200212_111655.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The first thing you need is a way to cut out those hexagons. I use a combination of the Hex N More Ruler and You Hexie Thing Ruler. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k9V6pVknovQ/Xk7ielBotOI/AAAAAAAASu0/tWlhs-_IeWASPWEF5H2Da8rt8wW38BK0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200212_111703.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1305" data-original-width="1567" height="532" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k9V6pVknovQ/Xk7ielBotOI/AAAAAAAASu0/tWlhs-_IeWASPWEF5H2Da8rt8wW38BK0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200212_111703.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
You also need to decide on the sizes you want to end up with. My inside hexagon is 4.5" hexagon marked on the Hex N More. This is a nice size for me to cut the half hexies to do highs and lows for each day.<br />
<br />
The background needs to be one inch bigger on each side, so that actually means two inches larger (it took me a while to actually get this) So in my case I make a 4.5" inside hexagon and cut a 6.5" hexagon for the background.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tOmQzWMG8Q0/Xk7icBabNhI/AAAAAAAASuw/B89kmT9f1fkE4_T87W_V8mP7N-8GCtSmACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200212_111616.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tOmQzWMG8Q0/Xk7icBabNhI/AAAAAAAASuw/B89kmT9f1fkE4_T87W_V8mP7N-8GCtSmACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200212_111616.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
My current stack of backgrounds for Winter. With bonus triangles. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h2lTHwhieNk/Xk7ijKtfFGI/AAAAAAAASu4/qgfRpXX8LFsDAzaopKgmDKnP15FkxmyLwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200212_111632.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h2lTHwhieNk/Xk7ijKtfFGI/AAAAAAAASu4/qgfRpXX8LFsDAzaopKgmDKnP15FkxmyLwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200212_111632.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
You also need to cut batting to the inside hexagon size. 4.5" in my case. I am using Warm and Natural because its what I had. You definitely do not want a thick batting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CpSVgnc4d6Y/Xk7ikFXVR1I/AAAAAAAASu8/NksxFJJwU1Mbme90r0pZcYjBoHd9zN-kACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_130527_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="923" data-original-width="1581" height="372" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CpSVgnc4d6Y/Xk7ikFXVR1I/AAAAAAAASu8/NksxFJJwU1Mbme90r0pZcYjBoHd9zN-kACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_130527_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Background plus batting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m1E1cHIQNEo/Xk7ivDoZkxI/AAAAAAAASvE/3zanR20WWOMkqKdl5-xvJIMN0aaP70vDACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_130543_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1260" data-original-width="1539" height="522" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m1E1cHIQNEo/Xk7ivDoZkxI/AAAAAAAASvE/3zanR20WWOMkqKdl5-xvJIMN0aaP70vDACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_130543_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Center batting and then front side hexagon. I like to steam press at this point. Helps keep it from shifting and flattens it a bit. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z8Py-2moGgA/Xk7ixdr07xI/AAAAAAAASvI/l_DV6ZgoQ2I5DkuFC6MN4HovdHqK6tXlACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_130606.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1270" data-original-width="1539" height="528" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z8Py-2moGgA/Xk7ixdr07xI/AAAAAAAASvI/l_DV6ZgoQ2I5DkuFC6MN4HovdHqK6tXlACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_130606.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
On each side fold up and press. Do not fold the edge of fabric all the way to the batting, you want to leave a small gap to make the turning up easier. Otherwise things get too bulky too quickly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7BRLZycF104/Xk7izp5hnDI/AAAAAAAASvQ/RISg8eq0Wa8utKZkA1Fh9UwYHl68z1JHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_130729.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1248" data-original-width="1544" height="516" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7BRLZycF104/Xk7izp5hnDI/AAAAAAAASvQ/RISg8eq0Wa8utKZkA1Fh9UwYHl68z1JHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_130729.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Here each side is folded once, close to the edge of the batting/top hexagon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gSiZMwMa5mc/Xk7i-ghgqUI/AAAAAAAASvY/2hi16J2D7PUjKYAbGD5oWb4-961iLM6GACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_130759.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1271" data-original-width="1572" height="516" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gSiZMwMa5mc/Xk7i-ghgqUI/AAAAAAAASvY/2hi16J2D7PUjKYAbGD5oWb4-961iLM6GACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_130759.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The next fold you take is going to come over the top hexagon, covering the raw edge of the top hexie and the batting. Continue to press.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vx9NMwKrByc/Xk7jHfd8S6I/AAAAAAAASvk/VfE920qateMRUOSgQLpM6tRdr6jeDoGrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_130856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1485" data-original-width="1564" height="606" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vx9NMwKrByc/Xk7jHfd8S6I/AAAAAAAASvk/VfE920qateMRUOSgQLpM6tRdr6jeDoGrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_130856.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Now you are folding one side at a time, press and pin. I use glass head pins for things like this so you can press without worrying about melting things.<br />
<br />
Make sure to miter those corners carefully.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yc4PgcvlEFE/Xk7jN6-n7ZI/AAAAAAAASvs/kqiIYjuE5DgDYQDrXMBNhuVp9VLw9ZXRQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200213_131242.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1225" data-original-width="1545" height="506" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yc4PgcvlEFE/Xk7jN6-n7ZI/AAAAAAAASvs/kqiIYjuE5DgDYQDrXMBNhuVp9VLw9ZXRQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200213_131242.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
These corners aren't stellar, you can do better! (so can I)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3rups_loDTo/Xk7joISYHbI/AAAAAAAASwA/hRu-FpIvRMUmeFgSMDcL20TLESK66KP7QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200219_123536.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3rups_loDTo/Xk7joISYHbI/AAAAAAAASwA/hRu-FpIvRMUmeFgSMDcL20TLESK66KP7QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200219_123536.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Now you are going to stitch around the edge on top of the hexagon through all the layers. I just did a straight stitch, some like to use a decorative stitch. <br />
<br />
For joining hexagons together you can use a zigzag or a decorative stitch. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3gCtP9XmXak/Xk7jta3DP9I/AAAAAAAASwI/0R4D9Qjg93A6CNtiSHSUoLmn2OfZcuAzQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200220_133613_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3gCtP9XmXak/Xk7jta3DP9I/AAAAAAAASwI/0R4D9Qjg93A6CNtiSHSUoLmn2OfZcuAzQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200220_133613_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Here is a close up of my temperature quilt so far. It is not perfect. I'm sure it could be better, but I don't have grand plans for this one other than the fun of making it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FrvRYjp6_2Q/Xk7jrNqF0BI/AAAAAAAASwE/hJMnweC5iuQMGSoUUuvtShWuqlAQV8SvwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200220_133623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FrvRYjp6_2Q/Xk7jrNqF0BI/AAAAAAAASwE/hJMnweC5iuQMGSoUUuvtShWuqlAQV8SvwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/20200220_133623.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The advantage of this method is you can just continue to grow the quilt. <br />
<br />
There is a lot more work and time up front, but when you are done putting the blocks together, they are done forever.<br />
<br />
It does also take a lot of fabric. Three yards of fabric yielded about 90 6.5" hexagons for the background. <br />
<br />
Please let me know if you have any questions or I made any errors.<br />
