Friday Finishes - A Plethora of Pea Pod Pouches

 Last week and over the weekend I sewed up 16 Pea Pod Pouches by Lazy Girl Designs.  This isn't the first time I've sewn them.  My first two experiences can be found here and here.
The original pattern calls for a 10" square of fabric and a 16" or longer zipper.  I've found that I can manage with a 14" zipper if necessary and also, if you have longer zippers, you can make larger pouches.  That whole math thing.  I've been amassing a collection of zippers from various places.  Joann store closing, Hobby Lobby clearance and the thrift store. 

 For the most part these will be going to teachers for Christmas Gifts.  What ever is left will go toward our guild Boutique for our quilt show.  Those Canadian flag pouches have a specific person!

 My fabric choices were mostly dictated by what zippers I had.

  Between using up the stash, left over batting, and clearance zippers, I think I've probably spent less than $2.00 per pouch.  I do plan to fill them for gifting, though.  If you're a teacher of my kids and reading this.  Feel free to shout out for one you like.  I guess it won't be a surprise....

Speaking of batting, the pattern calls for fusible fleece.  I just use batting and an adhesive spray.

More Sweet Pea Pod Pouches

 I made some more Sweet Pea Pod Pouches.

You may remember that I had done some math to figure out how much bigger I could make one.  I had some 22" zippers, so I started with 14" squares.

 It worked perfectly.

  I really like this bigger size.  I can see more of them in my future.

Sweet Pea Pod Pouches

 I've been seeing this pattern floating around, mostly on instagram.  I bought the pattern on a good sale and thought I'd try it out.  After last week's Major Finish, I thought it was the perfect time to do something fun and small.

 The Sweet Pea Pods fit the bill.  They went together very quickly.  The pattern makes two, because you are cutting a square into two half square triangles.  It technically takes two zippers, because you need two zipper pulls, even if you only use one half the zipper (see how its connected - one zip).

This wasting of a zipper actually really bothers me.  If I decided to do a bunch of these for gifts, I think I would try to source somewhere that I could buy extra zipper pulls.

 I'm going to try to make bigger pods next.  I picked up the longest regular zippers I could find.  It seems they max out at 22".  The pattern itself calls for 16" or longer.  By my math you can get away with a zipper that is 2" longer that the top of your triangle (the hypotenuse).

 So I've done the math and will try a larger pouch.  AFTER a certain other project.

Incidentally, I think this is the first time I've ever made zipper pouches.  Go me.
