Split Rail Fence Baby Quilt

I've been continuing on the kid sewing theme this past weekend, but today I'll show you a quilt I did for a friend of mine who is expecting a baby girl at the end of May, along with a few details of how I put it together.





It all started with the 1.5" x 8.5" cream batik strips that I had cut for another quilt, but then ran out of fabric.  I then went Stash hunting for some complementary girly prints and cut more 1.5" x 8.5" strips.

 When they are put all together, you have an 8.5" block

 I alternated the directions of the blocks and added a pretty pink marbled border.

 The quilting is a scalloped spiral flower in each block, along with stitch in the ditch around each block.  I then did a small spiral flower over each block intersection.  Otherwise it would have poofed strangely in those areas.

 On the border I used the scallop stitch on my machine so they would be more uniform than the free motion flowers.

One of the ladies at the sewing day a couple of weekends ago said it looked like a Split Rail Fence pattern.  So, even though I was making it up as a went along, it just goes to show you there's nothing new under the sun.
