Applying a Quilt Label

I've been trying to incorporate my quilt labels into the backs of my quilts more, lately.  In my Jacob's Ladder quilt the label was pieced into the back.  I like that it makes the label more permanent, and also it isn't the last thing that has to be finished.  AND you don't have to hand sew it on to the back of the quilt!

Today I'll show you how I did the label for my Ruby Hexagon Quilt.
First, decide what kind of label you want.  I decided to tie in the label with the hexagon pattern on the front.
Fold and iron under 1/4" on all sides.
Pin to your quilt backing.  I did a little rough measuring to make sure the label would end up on the back of the quilt and not off the edge!
Sew down the folded side - close to the edge.  I also added an extra line of stitching around the inside hexagon, too.  You don't have to do that.  Now you can layer and baste your quilt top and back.
When you do your quilting your label will truly be a part of the quilt.

You may have noticed the label is blank....The baby is due next week.  I'll complete the label for gifting.

I love that your label "matches" the front of your quilt! What a great idea! I don't know if I'm jumping the gun here and you'll explain after the baby is born, but how do you add the information to the label? Do you handwrite it on? If so, what kind of pen do you use that doesn't fade or bleed? I'm fairly new to quilting and haven't ever put labels on my quilts. I know I need to start doing this though. Thanks for the advice!

I could not be more excited. By the way, we've narrowed it down to two middle names! Almost there! We're so pathetic; I know.

What a neat idea to really incorporate the label into the backing - and this is such a pretty hexie quilt!

I too am new to quilting and would like to know what you write your label with so it doesn't fade out with washings. Beautiful quilt btw I hope to someday be at least 1/2 as good as you are!
