Baby Quinn's Quilt - A Fairy Finish

Back on a horse named Blogger....

I have so much that I want to share on here and I so appreciate being able to go back and check on what I did when, so I'm going to have to start making this blog a regular part of my week again.

So, to that end, a quilt that I finished back in March.  For my newest niece! My step-sister and her husband live in Austin, TX, so I haven't met her yet (will happen in Oct), but I finished and sent a quilt as soon as she was born (in March!)

I have a small hoarded stash of the Flower Fairies fabric by Cicely Mary Barker. E has a quilt of them and Mini will get one soon.  So I thought it would be fun for their cousin to have one as well.  The pink sashing was in my stash, and the flower border was brand new.

This was my pile of backing possibilities.  I went with the stars, because her momma loves stars.
Just free motion quilted with a sturdy machine sewn binding.  Hopefully the quilt is getting lots of use!

Lollipop Baby Quilt

A while back I won a bag of scraps from Carla at Live a Colorful Life.  Inside the scrap bag were two charm packs!  One was Lollipop by Moda.  I threw them together into this cute little baby quilt.

This one may stay around the Riley house until we have our baby.
The charm squares weren't quite big enough on their own, so I added a border.  It is a nice, soft, homespun in a gingham - from the stash!
The back is the same homespun.
I did have to purchase some fabric for binding.  I just didn't have anything like that cheddar/banana yellow in my stash.  I really like the swirls in the fabric.
The squares were quilted with spirals.
I did large Loop-de-loops in the border.  I actually didn't mean to do them in yellow, but I started without changing my thread, and really didn't want to pick out inches of quilting, so I just continued on.

I tried a bamboo batting in this quilt.  The batting itself was super soft.  The quilt most definitely doesn't lay flat, but I think that is more the quilting and the difference between a woven cotton and the homespun.  I would try bamboo again.  I may hold on to this one, just to see how the bamboo wears over time.

Finished size 34" x 39"
Bamboo batting.
Quilted on my home machine.
Aurifil thread, top and bottom.

Two Finish Tuesday

Hi!  I've finished up a couple of 'easy' quilts over the weekend.  First up is the blue and red baby quilt.  I got lots of responses last time I posted about it that red was great for a baby.  So here it is all done up.
Finished size is 30" x 36".  The lady bug fabric has been in my stash for at least 10 years.  It never seems to get completely used up.  The red I picked up at a thrift store.  Unknown age, but the width was smaller than our 44/42" average now, so definitely 'vintage'.  Pretty sure it is cotton, though.
Simple quilting.  I did the binding by machine; Hand sewing the mitered corners first, then machine the rest.

I also finished up Ugly Quilt #1
It's spectacular!  I used a thin polyester batting in it that I had picked up a whole roll of at Joann's Thanksgiving sale.  It is the perfect weight.  The quilt really fought being squared up.  I finally gave up because I didn't want to keep cutting it smaller.  It really doesn't matter.  This one is destined for the beach & car.
I used a thrift store sheet to back it.  The binding is also scrappy.  I save my 2" strips separately, so I just randomly sewed a bunch together for the binding.  This binding is also completely machine finished.  Finished size: 53" x 95".

Ruby Baby Quilt

In an attempt to Finish Things and generally Clean Up Around Here - I put this baby quilt together with most of my left over Ruby fabrics.

Three inch blocks in a random pattern.  Three three-inch borders to make it big enough for a baby girl.

I used my left over Ruby flannel and also some flannel from Joann's and the Windows quilt to finish off the back.  I also bound this one in flannel.  Super snugly for a babe.  It does not have a determined recipient.  I suppose the first among my friends to pop out a girl will get this one.
Finished size is 38"x43".
The quilting: Just some curly free motion quilting in the center, with a wave stitch along the border seams.  Once again, less quilting makes for a softer quilt.  And I ran out of thread, anyway.
I've been trying to be more deliberate about the labels.  Bordered and applied before I did the quilting.  I figure this makes it a little more secure/permanent.  And then its not like One More Thing To Do at the end.  The down side is that it is a little more difficult to get even with the sides.  Maybe I should make round labels!
