There is so much to say about this quilt I'm not even sure where to start!
First off, it was my second oldest WIP sitting around. I started it either 1999 or 2000. I remember where we were living, but not entirely sure when I started it.
Second, visually, I am absolutely pleased with it.
However, here are a couple of glimpses of the back of the top before I set about basting it:
At the time, my ideas and designs were way ahead of my abilities. I actually had pieced in the pheasants, dragons, yellow, black and red, deliberately leaving the squares open to add something later. As you can see, there is no such thing as a quarter inch seam in this baby!
My first attempt at those squares was a satin stitch, which I then ended up covering with ribbon!
The shiny red with dragons is a brocade, and the orange/yellow squares are a sari fabric. All polyester, I'm sure. None of it washable!
I seem to recall using large amounts of fray check on the edges, as well. Yeah, great craftsmanship going on around here!
The quilting is fairly minimal, as you might notice. I outlined the brocade squares with a red sulky rayon. The yellow quilting, which you can actually see is a Coats & Clark twisted rayon. The bobbin and stitching on the ribbon was done with black Aurifil.
I've had the backing ever since I started the quilt. Its just been waiting it's turn. A black and gold bamboo print from Joann's. I was working there at the time.
I am really glad to have this done. It can only be for hanging, as I can't wash the thing, and the black picks up lint like crazy!
