Four-In-Art: Literature: Fairly Tales #3

Today's the Day! Another round of Four-In-Art Mini Quilt Reveals.  If you've been following along this year, you'll know that our theme for the year is Literature.  We could do whatever we wanted within that, so I've gone down the road of Fairy Tales.  As each piece has emerged, my goal has been to show the story without having to explain it, so without further ado, Fairy Tales #3.

In case you missed it, let me direct your eyes to the small green bead at the bottom of the orange layer.

The Princess and the Pea!

Now in the real story by Hans Christian Andersen, there were 20 mattresses and 20 feather beds.  I stuck with a total of twenty due to space and ability in construction.  It was my first time sewing with selvedges, so that was pretty fun!

Once I got ideas about embellishing, I tried my best to add a bit more in the realm of 3D, with things such as lace and beads.
 A puffy pillow on top.
And the very boring back.  I completely forgot about hanging pockets, as I was so excited to get this one finished, and yes, it does indeed need a label.  I have a few that I need to get printed for projects, so I'll do them all at the same time.

I'll talk a bit more about the actual construction in my next post, like how I built that awesome ladder!  But until then you simply must go look at all the others quilts.  Here is a list to help you out.

Rachel, how perfect!!!! I love the bead work and cannot wait to hear about the ladder. I made the big-girl Princess and the Pea quilt for my niece's little girls last Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yours is just charming!

Oh, yes--I want to hear about that ladder too!

I loved this little quilt, with its 20 beds, and wooden 4-poster best. And that pea--the best! I'm in a fairy tale swap coming up and you can bet I'm going to steal some of your ideas for my turn at contribution. This is so charming--well done!! I have loved seeing all your interpretations of fairy tales in this round; can't wait for the last one.

The first thing I looked for was the pea - it's just brilliant!:-) You've used all the different materials to such great effect, and I can just imagine scaling the tottery ladder up to the top. What fun:-)

I too am curious about that ladder! Are you sure it's not chocolate? You will have a wonderful quartet of quilts based on fairy tales come November! Great interpretation!

I got the biggest smile on my face the moment I looked at your first photo. I knew exactly what the story was. Your techniques are wonderful. I am looking forward to learn about the ladder.
