Starting this post out on a bragging note! WD won a third place ribbon in his youth category. The judge's comment on his Focal Point Frog Fabric made me laugh. There was no plan to this quilt. I'll give it a solo post soon.
Next: I don't have quilt maker's names listed for these quilts. I figure they agreed to have their quilts photographed by putting in the show, but not necessarily their names splashed on the internet.
On to the show - and my opinions.
I think everyone should be entering their local quilt shows. I totally understand the argument on not wanting to have your quilt judged, but I have never received a comment that made me cry, or that I completely disagreed with. The judges aren't there to criticize you. (also, there are a few shows that will have an unjudged category)
The above quilt is the first place winner that beat my Feathered Trees Quilt (I won a third place ribbon)
There was a gypsy wife quilt in the bunch. Bright, vivid, scrappy, wonderful, simple vertical straight line quilting. Guess what? Modern quilts are slowly becoming more mainstream.
And they are winning ribbons! Another reason to enter local quilt shows: Remember the hoopla about how many quilts were submitted to Quilt Con and how few made it in? Local shows generally aren't juried, and entries are usually limited to how many they can fit in a space, first come, first entered.
(Ignore the girl - she's mine, and a ham) This Tula Pink pattern was in the show. It's done in batiks. Love this soooo much.

This one was given a Judge's Fancy ribbon. One of those black and white fabrics are skulls!

Another reason to enter a local quilt show? Usually only $5 (around here) for the first quilt and less for subsequent quilts. That usually comes with a ticket to then get in the show. If you were going to go anyway, you should enter a quilt. No money lost!
A close up of the Machine Workmanship Award. This was quilted by Karen McTavish. I'll be honest (and maybe step on toes), I think that a quilt like this should be entered in the major shows, not the little ones. The maker was not local, and I can't help but wonder if they enter it in all the shows they can to win the $$$. Snark over.

Ok, ribbons and comments.
Feathered Christmas got a third place ribbon. Yay!
These are the comments with the quilts. It is apparent that what I thought was a good way of binding isn't what the judges are looking for. I will have to do some research on this as these are the same judges doing our Guild's show this fall. The irony? The good comment about binding on the table runner? I did that one completely by machine! And here I thought that was poo-pooed.
I am going to try to get a couple more blog posts written. I've been lax lately and now that Spring is actually here, it is so hard to sit and type. And the baby constantly yells Shoes, Coat, Outside. Who can say no to that?
