The year's theme is Urban. This quarter's theme is Maps
Without further ado, I present:
'In Your Neighborhood'
(all together: 'who are the people in your neighborhood?)
This is a map loosely based on the small town that we visit 'up north'. An aerial view. The funny thing about art quilts is even when they seem fairly easy they generally cause me some angst. In this case I had to let go of being an exact copy. There just wasn't enough room to fit all the houses in town without going ridiculously small.
Lets take a walk around the neighborhood, shall we?
I have finally mastered the french knot!
Every piece of fabric is different in this piece. For a total of 30 different fabrics on the front.
Lots of thread variety for hand embroidery, as well.
Green Gutermann polyester for the background stippling.
I'm in love with my train tracks!
I put hanging pockets on each corner, because I'm not sure how I want to hang it, and I might change my mind. Hanging it with the train tracks looks better, but that puts South on top.

*sorry for the horrible picture editing. Had to use old laptop to post this and couldn't crop my pictures. Perhaps I'll go back and fix them when I get a chance....

I love it Rachel! Of course now the song is in my head. I love the embroidery and the quilting and the railroad track. I want to come and live in the orange house with the swirling roof.
Woohoo! What a fabulous art quilt you've created this time around!
I loved the guided tour of all the houses, and really enjoyed the amount of detail you incorporate through your hand stitching and your lovely and perfect French knots. That's one thing I like about your quilts--and something I need to emulate--is the use of embellishment.
I love all the little houses, the road (with the stripey line down the center), the railroad tracks. And the stippling makes it look like a green field of grass, further adding interest and texture.
So terrific! I love this--bravo!
:) Elizabeth
I agree about the fabulous level of detail in your little quilt. You must be really fast at embroidery! The assortment of stitches really brought the neighborhood to life. Those railroad tracks were a very nice touch too. Thanks for the fun tour!
This is fabulous... love it.
Love it! Is your group open for those who might like to join? I'd be interested! I randomly happened to make a mini map project this quarter anyway! http://www.peaceandplastic.com/2013/10/homesick-ohio.html
I want to live in your cute little neighborhood! Love that you put houses upside down and sideways too. All the detail is so wonderfully done with the variety of fabrics and all the embroidery. Very nice. Glad to be a part of this great group.
Oh, my heart!! I just adore your little quilt....don't tell, but I think yours is my favorite!!
Pure fun, Rachel. :D I love all the hand stitching on it. Whoop! Whoop!

Such a nice interpretation of maps. Hand embroidery definitely goes with your quilt. Each of your houses has its own personality (if a house can have that) and I want to know about the occupants of all the houses. I also put handing pockets in all the corners of my maps quilt so I can hang it any way I want. I guess N-S-E-W directions are all a matter of "perspective."
Also, do let your blog visitors know they can view my quilt on my blog: www.patchworkbreeze.blogspot.com
Such a fun quilt! It's been awhile since I've made a doll size quilt...after seeing yours...I'm inspired to do so as I love it!!
Oh, Rachel, this is just wonderful! I love the wonkiness of the houses and all the handstitching for details. What an outstanding interpretation!
Wow, wow, wow! This is so cute. Your hand work is fantastic! Great interpretation.
