Ombre Quilt - Finish!

Oh, man, I am so happy to have this one done!  It has been a long time in the making.  How long?  Well, I went back in the blog post list, and the first time I could find a reference for it was March 30, 2011.   Scratch that, the official beginning looks like it was March 23, 2011

In any case it was originally intended as the background for this mermaid, but it was too busy and she got lost.
You can find the finished Mermaid Quilt Here.

I used a fusible quilting grid.  Here's my tutorial.  There's a catch, though.  I ran into a couple problems with this.  It got distorted after all the squares were sewn together.  I even was careful to not sew every seam the same direction.  I don't know if it's because of the size, or because it is on point.  Also, it got very thick to sew through!  So, I don't know if you can tell, but even though I cut the inside 'squared up', it isn't straight to the piecing.

The back.  Guess I should have ironed before photographing!

The thread lined up in order of use.  13 Total.

Wavy quilting on the inside of the quilt and the outer border.  Straight lines on the white inner border.  I made the skinny white inside border because I thought it helped pop out and frame the blue.  Otherwise the light blue on top doesn't look blue.

I've been pretty good about labels on the last four quilts.  Getting them on before I do the quilting.
 Laundry line shot.

I was freezing taking these pictures!  It was in the high 60s Sunday  When I took the pictures Monday it was barely 30.  And windy.  Talk about a shock to the system!

The details:
39" x 42"
Used a fusible on point grid
1" finished squares (I don't know how many - hundreds)
Quilted on my home machine.
I'm going to keep this one!

  2. Wow! That's a lot of squares to keep organized. I love the way the mermaid quilt turned out too. I especially like the stripes in her hair.

  3. OOOOOH, Rachel!
This is just so beautiful. Stunning, even, in a soft, want-to-wrap-up-in-this sort of way.

I love the wavy quilting and laughed when I saw all those spools of thread. Fabulous!

I tend to take a long time on some quilts, and while I'm happy to get them done, there's usually a reason why they needed the time. I'm glad the mermaid went to another quilt, because this one is so lovely by itself.

    Congratulations!!
