When I thought about what kind of quilt I wanted to make, I knew I wanted something that would show off the poppies with out chopping them into bits, and also something that was easy in the math area. So my goal was a 10" finished block.
You'll need to decide on your stack of fabrics. I went with 6. That's three fabrics in each block.
Decide which will be the rectangle for the block and which fabrics will be the squares. Cut squares to 5.5" square. Cut rectangles 5.5" x 10.5". I made 35 blocks, for a layout of 5x7, which is always pleasing to the eye.
You might have to audition which squares should go with which rectangle. Contrast is good, between the opposite square and the rectangle.
Start sewing your squares together. (Chain piecing good)
Make sure you're happy with your choices, and sew the block pairs to the rectangles.
Decide on your layout, and assemble the quilt! (my quilt does not match above layout, I know)
I've got some fishy fabric I've been keeping around for a long time for Mr. Riley, that I think will lend itself well to this pattern. I'll have to put in on the (ever growing) list.
Let me know if you have any questions, or if I royally screwed up my instructions.
This is cool. I keep looking at my stash (which has now leaked out of the closet onto the floor and will very soon take over my room) and think that I need to do some large-block style quilts that use up fabric. . .and fast!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial!
